Modern Vernacular Architecture for the South Downs

Nick Adams Architects is a small architecture studio in Lewes, East Sussex with a focus on contemporary vernacular architecture, conservation and sustainable design.

We take on a range of small to medium sized projects including residential extensions, renovations, retrofits and one-off houses; restaurant and retail fit-outs; and small residential developments.

We believe in working closely with our clients to produce design solutions that not only fulfil a shared vision but are also cost effective and environmentally sensitive.

Our small studio approach aims to provide the client with a personal and approachable service with a single point of contact and someone who genuinely cares about making the most of your project.

Our architecture is lead by the heritage of the South Downs and inspired by traditional local crafts, which we reinterpret in a contemporary way – a modern vernacular.

Central to Nick Adams Architects’ approach are design solutions that are cost-effective and help minimise our impact on the planet.

We are committed to promoting the use of low carbon, locally sourced and sustainable materials, preferring to work using natural insulation materials and breathable plasters and finishes. We also strive to remove VOC containing products where alternatives exist. The creation of healthy living spaces is of utmost importance to us.

‘Nick himself designed our new build house in the South Downs National Park and carefully, professionally and successfully steered it through a challenging planning process. I have recommended Nick Adams Architects to many others and I know they have been more than satisfied too.’

Joss Macleod Old Drove House

‘We very much enjoyed working with Nick on our full refurb/extension/loft conversion project. He listened to our emerging ideas and turned them into creative solutions. When things got difficult through planning his clever tweaks assuaged concerns while maintaining the integrity of what we wanted. We are delighted with the outcomes and are hugely grateful for all his hard work and advice along the way.’

Ed and Alan Pelham Terrace

‘Nick is everything you should expect from a highly trained and experienced architect, and a pleasure to work with.’

Ken and Helen St Swithun’s Terrace

‘Nick was brilliant from start to finish – practical, responsive, thoughtful and reliable. He came up with a creative design that matched our brief, and project-managed it through to completion with care, ensuring that we ended up with the garden room we’d always wanted.’

I & R Flint Corner House

‘I was impressed with the way that Nick understood the brief and then translated this into a design that met what I was looking for and managed my expectations in relation to budget.

Nick’s calm and thorough approach to the project and having such a detailed specification was a major reason that the build was able to run smoothly, and the builders work confidently and independently throughout. During the build the builders often commented on how useful the package was and left no room for ambiguity.

The final build exceeded my expectations, and the vision that Nick had brought to the design on paper really translated brilliantly in reality. Thank you, Nick!’
