Flint Corner Garden Room
STATUS: COMPLETE

Garden room and landscape design in the grounds of an Arts and Crafts house in Lewes, East Sussex.

The main house was designed by well known local architect Rowland Hawke Halls in the Arts and Crafts tradition. The garden was steeply slopped down towards an open field and had a small timber cabin under some trees.
The brief was to create a landscaped space for the family to enjoy and use all year round for outdoor cooking, dinning and enjoying the garden.
Our clients loved the contemporary flint work of the nearby Depot Cinema, so a flint feature wall became the focal point of the design.

It was important for the design to compliment the Arts and Crafts aesthetic of the main house so the materials palette was kept simple and traditional using local flint, brick, stone flags, zinc and oak.

We undertook a sun study to track the path of the sun across the site and inform the design of the overhanging canopy to provide shade to the interior dining space during the summer months.
A garden window seat was built into the red brick walls and the dining table can be placed up against it.

A bioethanol fire was built into the interior flint wall.

A pizza oven was built into the retaining wall. Lime mortar was used for the oven and the brickwork.

‘Nick was brilliant from start to finish – practical, responsive, thoughtful and reliable. He came up with a creative design that matched our brief, and project-managed it through to completion with care, ensuring that we ended up with the garden room we’d always wanted.’
