New low energy clifftop house near Brighton with expansive views of the sea.

Our brief was to create a ‘country modern’ style low energy family home that took full advantage of the sea views from its clifftop location. Our clients wanted a living space that took views the horizon, a space for entertaining, gymnasium, meditation room, library (for an extensive collection of books) plus guest accommodation.

The tall glazing required to simultaneously capture the sea, horizon and sky would have been subjected to signiifcant solar gain and glare, so all of the upper sections were clad in timber louvres.

A material pallet of warm colours and textures was developed, using both snapped and cobbled flint to reference the local stone and coastal location. This was contrasted with timber, polished concrete and warm neutral tones inside and out to create something that was distinctly modern but also ‘homely’ and unfussy.

Ground floor plan – The living spaces are to the rear with views out to sea. We placed guest accommodation to the front, set back from the open plan living area to provide some privacy.
